Keyboard buying guide
New to custom keyboards? These are the choices that change how a board feels and sounds the most.
1. Pick a layout
Layout size decides how many keys you keep and how much desk space the board takes.
- 60% — no arrows or function row; the most compact.
- 65% — adds arrow keys; a popular daily driver.
- 75% — adds a function row while staying compact.
- TKL — full layout without the number pad.
- Full size — everything, including the number pad.
2. Choose a switch feel
Switches sit under every key and set the typing feel.
- Linear — smooth all the way down; quiet and fast.
- Tactile — a small bump tells you the key registered.
- Clicky — a bump plus an audible click; best for home use.
Shared office? A quiet tactile or a lubed linear switch keeps the noise down.
3. Shape the sound
How the plate is mounted and what it is made of change the sound as much as the switches do.
- Gasket mount — softer, slightly flexible feel with a rounded sound.
- Top or tray mount — firmer and more consistent from key to key.
- FR4 or polycarbonate plates — deeper and muted. Aluminum is crisp; brass is dense and bright.
4. Select keycaps
Keycaps are what your fingers touch, so material and shape matter.
- PBT — textured, resists shine, slightly deeper sound.
- ABS — smoother and brighter; supports shine-through legends for backlighting.
- Doubleshot legends are molded in, so they never wear off.
5. Connectivity and firmware
Wired USB-C has the lowest latency and nothing to charge. Wireless boards trade a battery for a cleaner desk. Most of our builds support QMK or VIA, so you can remap any key and build layers without installing extra software.
6. Timing and budget
In-stock builds ship soonest. Made-to-order builds are assembled after you approve the parts list. Group buys pool orders for a custom production run, so they take longer—follow each stage on the group buy status board. Not sure? Ask for a quote with your budget.

Can I change my configuration after ordering?
Yes, until assembly begins. Email contact@meteoriccreates.com with your order details and the change you want, and we will confirm any price difference first.
How do I pay?
Checkout runs on Stripe, so you can pay with a card or another method Stripe offers in your region. We never see or store your full card number.
Where do you ship?
Checkout accepts shipping addresses in most countries. If you are outside North America, send a quote request first so we can confirm delivery options and timing for your address.
What if something arrives damaged or stops working?
Email us with your order details and a few photos or a short video of the problem. Because every board is assembled to your specification, we handle issues one order at a time and will reply with next steps.
